The carcass of a giant squid almost 5 meters long washed up on the shore of Scarborough Beach in Cape Town (South Africa). Writes about it Metro.
The animal belongs to the species giant squid (Architeuthis dux), a species of deep-sea squid.
“While there are other large squids out there, I am pretty sure this is the real giant squid,” Mike Vecchione, invertebrate zoologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told Live Science.
According to South African media, this squid was the second giant squid to wash up on the beach this year.
The size of another squid was 3.5 meters. Giant squid can reach up to 13 meters in length.
Earlier, in the coast of Chile, fishermen caught a fish almost 6 meters long – the herring king. He usually lives at great depths and does not come across in the network. Its catch is considered a harbinger of disaster in many cultures.
