Moscow otolaryngologists pushed a stylus stuck in the girl’s nose into the esophagus

The child stuck a foreign body into his nostril

On October 3, specialists from the National Medical Research Center for Otorhinolaryngology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia were able to remove a foreign body from the respiratory tract of a two-year-old girl, whom doctors from a family clinic and one of the hospitals in the Moscow region had previously been unable to help.

As MK learned, on September 28, in the northeast of the Moscow region, a 34-year-old history, social studies and geography teacher was working at a computer, and her two-year-old daughter was sitting next to her at a small table. The girl drew and played with pencils. At one point, hearing her daughter’s laughter, the woman looked back – the baby was sitting with one pencil in her left nostril and the second in her right ear. The mother pulled the pencils out of the sensory holes, scolded the little joker and continued working. Then the woman did not yet know that deep in the child’s nose there was a blue lead from a pencil. Throughout the evening, the girl had a runny nose and blue mucus came out of her left nostril. The mother thought that the girl had drawn on the nasal mucosa with a blue pencil. The parent hoped that everything would go away and be washed off with water, so she did not turn to doctors for help. On October 2, the mother and child went to the family clinic to see the pediatrician, as her daughter’s runny nose had worsened. The pediatrician saw a foreign body in the baby’s left nostril. However, it was not possible to pull it out without special tools – the stylus was too far in the nose. The family was sent to an ENT specialist, but he couldn’t get it either. The doctor suggested calling an ambulance. The hospital did not have special equipment to rinse and remove the foreign body. The daughter and father, who accompanied the baby while the mother remained with the five-year-old child, were sent home so that they could later seek help at another medical facility.

-The child was breathing heavily all night, snoring. My husband and I didn’t sleep, we were afraid that the child would choke on the stylus,” the mother said.

On the morning of October 3, the woman called the National Medical Research Center of Otorhinolaryngology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia and called doctors. Specialists went home to the little patient, did an endoscopy twice, sucked out the mucus and pushed a pencil lead with a diameter of 3 mm into the esophagus with a tool. Later the foreign body came out naturally.
