Moscow City Court on the suit of the Ministry of Justice liquidated the Sakharov Center – Kommersant

The Moscow City Court satisfied the claim of the Ministry of Justice and decided to liquidate the Sakharov Center (recognized as a foreign agent). The Ministry of Justice claimed that the Sakharov Center committed “systematic, gross and irremediable violations of the law.” Representatives of the center did not recognize the violation, RIA Novosti reports.
“The claims for the liquidation of the regional public organization “Public Commission for the Preservation of the Heritage of Academician Sakharov” are satisfied,” the judge announced the decision. He noted that the decision is also the basis for excluding the organization from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities.
During the court session, representatives of the Ministry of Justice stated that as a result of the inspection of the Sakharov Center, “systematic, gross and irremediable violations of the law” were revealed. The Ministry of Justice also noted that video materials without marking a foreign agent were published on the center’s website, for which the organization and its executive director were fined a total of about 5 million rubles under 10 protocols. In total, 20 protocols have been drawn up with respect to the Sakharov Center, some have not yet been considered or have not entered into force.
In addition, according to the Ministry of Justice, the Sakharov Center carried out activities in regions where it does not have branches, thus violating the law. It should be noted that as one of the examples of violation of the law, the Ministry of Justice named the participation of the organization in the All-Russian exhibition dedicated to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Academician Sakharov. This event was held in a number of subjects of the Russian Federation, but the organization itself is registered in Moscow.
Representatives of the Sakharov Center during the meeting did not recognize the violation and insisted on dismissing the claim. According to representatives of the commission, “the decision to liquidate will mean a death sentence for her.”
The Sakharov Center (the official name is the Public Commission for the Preservation of Academician Sakharov’s Heritage – the Sakharov Center) was established in 1996 on the initiative of the Andrei Sakharov Foundation (recognized as an undesirable organization). In the apartment of academician Sakharov on Zemlyanoy Val, equipped as a museum, his archives were kept, and exhibitions, conferences and public discussions were held in the center. Foreign politicians, human rights activists, journalists and poets spoke there.
On January 24, the Moscow Mayor’s Office sent a notice about the eviction of the Sakharov Center from three premises on Zemlyanoy Val. It is prescribed to vacate the museum-apartment in which the academician and Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov lived in a month, the building of the center and the exhibition hall – in three. The reason was the status of a foreign agent assigned to the Sakharov Center back in 2014.
