Over 500 participants from all federal districts, Moscow and St. Petersburg brought together the Russian Judo Championship, which started in Yekaterinburg.
It is noteworthy that these days the 50th anniversary of this sport in our country is being celebrated. At the end of October 1972, the newspapers reported the creation of a new federation, headed by Vladislav Sumochkin at the founding plenum in the capital.
The competition was preceded by a draw in seven male and seven female weight categories. The attention of the fans is first of all riveted to those in which medalists of the Olympic Games in Tokyo Madina Taimazova and Niyaz Ilyasov, prize-winners of the world championships Yakub Shamilov and Alexandra Babintseva and other eminent judokas are involved. It was the Muscovite Babintseva who became the first owner of the gold award, defeating Alena Prokopenko in the final fight in the weight of 78 kilograms already in the 15th second.
Competitions at the Palace of team sports will last until November 4.
