More than 870 landfills identified in three regions near Baikal

More than 870 landfills have been found near the unique Russian Lake Baikal. Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia Alexander Kozlov told “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”that the waste was recorded in Buryatia, the Irkutsk region and in Transbaikalia.
In April 2023, Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko instructed the Ministry of Natural Resources and regional authorities to count all illegal landfills in the Baikal natural territory. To fix them, data from remote sensing of the earth were used.
Kozlov said following the results: “We have completed the inventory in the Irkutsk region, Transbaikalia and Buryatia. Moreover, even the smallest landfills were examined.”
872 garbage heaps were described: in the Irkutsk region – 305 pieces, in the Republic of Buryatia – 491 pieces, in the Trans-Baikal Territory – 76 pieces.
According to him, the regional authorities propose to include 597 landfills in the state register of objects of accumulated environmental damage. This will help find sources of funding for liquidation. “208 landfills in Transbaikalia and Irkutsk are small, and the regions have undertaken to clean them up on their own,” the head of the department summed up.
