Students and young teachers of the MISIS University have developed a unique synthetic material that is able to restore its original shape under micrographitization conditions.
As the scientists explain, the synthetic plate is covered with a special cellular material that has “shape memory”, that is, it can restore the geometric shape given to it after it has been changed. An experiment on working with such a plate is supposed to be carried out on the Russian segment of the International Space Station, in particular, a plate will be printed on the ground, folded into the desired shape, then unfolded and covered with cellular material. According to the calculations of the researchers, on the ISS, the plate will return to its predetermined shape. And the astronauts will be able to watch in real time how it rolls up, turns into a tube of the desired length and diameter.
According to Yusef Khesuani, a specialist in biotechnological research at 3D Bioprinting Solutions, such experiments with shape memory materials in microgravity have not yet been carried out by either Russian or foreign scientists. And the very creation of such a “tissue” can be applied by doctors all over the world in regenerative medicine.
