Ministry of Internal Affairs admits shortage of printers for printing passports

Foreign manufacturers of dot matrix printers have stopped deliveries to Russia due to the military operation in Ukraine. The Ministry of Internal Affairs uses such printers to print domestic passports and can no longer purchase them. The newspaper reported Vedomosti with reference to the head of the Department of Information Technologies, Communications and Information Protection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Yuri Voinov.
“Matrix printers, historically, are not produced in Russia. Taking into account the introduction of new sanctions, we theoretically cannot even buy new ones,” Yuri Voinov said at a round table in the Federation Council on November 24. According to him, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is ready to purchase such printers from Russian manufacturers if they can launch their production. Now in Russia such printers are not made, Vedomosti notes.
According to the newspaper, the Ministry of Internal Affairs used printers from Japanese manufacturers Epson and OK and Italian Olivetti. After the start of the military operation, they stopped deliveries due to sanctions and financial difficulties, Vedomosti reminds.
The experts polled by the edition consider that the purchased printers in the Ministry of Internal Affairs will suffice for a year. Experts allow delays in the work of government agencies due to a shortage of printers in the future. At the same time, in their opinion, it is worth importing such equipment into Russia under parallel import schemes only on order, because it is unprofitable to store it in a warehouse.
