Near the main entrance to the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is estimated to be 4,500 years old, a hidden corridor nine meters long has been discovered.
This discovery was made as part of the Scan Pyramids project. Members have been using non-invasive technology since 2015, including infrared thermography and 3D modeling, to look inside the structure.
The Great Pyramid was built around 2560 BC. during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops). It is the last surviving object of the Seven Wonders of the World of the ancient world.
Its height is 146 meters (479 feet). Before the appearance of the Eiffel Tower, it was considered the tallest structure created by people.
Scientists suggest that the found corridor was created to redistribute the weight of the pyramid. It is believed that for the same purpose, in another part of it, five rooms were built above the burial chamber of the pharaoh.
The head of the Supreme Council of Egypt for Antiquities, Mustafa Waziri, said that the scanning of the ancient monument will continue.
“To find out what we can find under it or at the end of this corridor,” he said.
