Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that it is necessary to work with residents of new regions who are still waiting for “Ukrainian tanks.” He proposed sending those of them who threaten the security of Russia to forced labor camps in Siberia.
“If these are people who harm Russia, they need to be exposed and punished, sent to Siberia. Like this. For re-education in forced labor camps,” Mr. Medvedev said in an interview with Russian media. At the same time, he noted that in the new regions there are not many who are waiting for the return of the Ukrainian authorities.
“There are simply people there who sit and think: “Whoever is stronger, we will serve.” There are certainly such people there. But nevertheless, we must work with everyone. Well, we need to convince these people that we are back for good,” said Dmitry Medvedev.
On September 30, 2022, following the results of referendums, the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions became part of Russia. By September 2023, more than 2.2 million residents of new regions had received Russian passports. Last December, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that passports of Russian citizens had been issued to almost 90% of residents of these regions.
