The rolling stock of the Moscow metro is being updated at an unprecedented speed

Moscow continues to modernize its public transport system. Thus, the metro is not only expanding its network (it has increased by more than 1.5 times since 2010), but also updating its rolling stock at a record pace. Thus, in 2024 and 2026, new types of trains will appear on the lines, and by 2030 it is planned that the rolling stock will be updated to 95%. The mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, announced this in his blog.
Back in 2010, the majority of Mosmetro lines operated morally and physically outdated cars, and only about 13% of new trains, recalls Alexander Syromyatnikov, Candidate of Economic Sciences. However, since then, about 4,500 new cars have been purchased, and at the moment 74% of the Moscow metro’s rolling stock consists of modern trains.
“Modern trains now run on most metro lines,” the expert notes. “They are equipped with air conditioning, wide doors and information screens, and the newest trains have pass-through passages throughout the car and USB charging points. In terms of comfort, the new trains are in no way inferior to their world analogues and even surpass them in many respects.”
Considering that constant work is underway to create even more advanced trains, we can say that Moscow is one of the undisputed leaders in the pace of renewal and improvement of rolling stock, Syromyatnikov emphasized.
