Lessons on financial literacy started in metropolitan schools

Open financial literacy classes have started in Moscow schools. According to the capital’s Department of Finance, the first such lessons were held at schools No. 1501 and 1164.

At school No. 1501, primary school students were told why people need money, explained how to keep a personal budget and what items of expenditure and income should be in it, explained how not to fall into the hands of financial scammers and avoid debts. They were also told what financial institutions exist in Russia and what kind of work they do. Then the children watched a fragment of the cartoon “Smeshariki”, dedicated to financial literacy, and answered questions related to the plot of the cartoon.

At school No. 1164, eighth-graders learned how people plan their income and expenses, how they learn to save, learn their financial rights. They were also shown a video clip of the winners of the city competition “Budget for Citizens” about the financial reforms of Peter the Great, created by teachers and a student of a law college.

As Elena Zyabbarova, head of the Moscow Department of Finance, noted, the department actively supports the inclusion of elements of financial literacy in the school curriculum.

— The format of open lessons has proven itself well for a long time. Direct contact with children is very important. Many behavior patterns, including financial ones, are laid down at a young age. And our task is to contribute as much as possible, to help in the education of financially responsible, literate citizens, – said the head of the department.
