Russian Minister of Education Sergei Kravtsov visited Chechnya on a working visit. He showed the head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, a history textbook for the 10th grade, which had been changed after complaints from public figures and politicians in the North Caucasus. The edits concerned Stalin’s deportations of peoples.

“It has now corrected all errors and removed the rude language made in the previous edition against entire peoples who were subjected to Stalinist repressions. In a word, justice has triumphed!” Mr. Kadyrov wrote in Telegram.

In the North Caucasus, a textbook authored by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky and MGIMO rector Anatoly Torkunov was previously criticized because of the passage “Accomplices of the Occupiers” about collaborators during the Great Patriotic War. The deported peoples were listed immediately after the “Vlasovites” and “Banderaites,” although it was stipulated that as a result of the deportation of entire peoples, “many innocent people were repressed.” After the complaints paragraph was rewritten: Now it does not mention specific peoples, and the deportation is called “a tragic page in the history of the Second World War.” The Ministry of Education considered that the textbook, even before the changes, fully complied with the federal state educational standard of secondary general education, but took into account that “the history of the forced resettlement of representatives of 12 peoples of the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War is one of the most dramatic pages of recent national history.” .
