Journalist Muzhdabaev received six years in Russia in absentia for calls for terrorism

The Second Western District Military Court (Moscow) sentenced in absentia one of the leaders of the Crimean Tatar TV channel ATR, former Moskovsky Komsomolets journalist Aider Muzhdabaev to six years in prison with deprivation of the right to administer websites for four years in the case of calls for terrorism. Muzhdabaev is now outside Russia.
As reported TASS in the press service of the court, Muzhdabaev was found guilty under Part 2 of Art. 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Public calls for terrorist activities, public justification of terrorism or propaganda of terrorism”). “I’m sad. They didn’t give much. Based on the results of my Russophobic crimes, I expected at least eight years,” the journalist wrote in his Telegram channel.
A case of calls for terrorism against Aider Muzhdabaev was opened in 2019. In the same year, Rosinformonitoring included him in the list of terrorists and extremists. In June 2020, the Investigative Committee reported that the reason for initiating a case was two posts on the social network Facebook (owned by Meta, banned in the Russian Federation) in 2018. In them, the journalist called for “seizing Russian agents” and exchanging them for the Crimean director Oleg Sentsov, who was then serving a sentence in Labytnangi (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug) in a terrorism case. In 2020, the Ministry of Internal Affairs put the journalist on the international wanted list.
Aider Muzhdabaev was born and raised in Tambov. From 2008 to 2015, he was deputy editor-in-chief of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper. In 2015, he left Russia. After the move, Muzhdabaev took the position of deputy general director of the Ukrainian TV channel AT++R, broadcasting on the YouTube video hosting site. The exact location of the journalist is unknown. Accounts for collecting donations from YouTube broadcasts are registered in Estonia.
