Japan will increase investment in the production of chips by 82%

In 2024, Japan plans to spend $ 7 billion on equipment for the production of chips. This is the largest annual increase in the world. For comparison: China will increase such spending by only 2%, North and South America – by 23.9%, and South Korea – by 41.5%. Taiwan remains the leader in the production of equipment for the manufacture of chips – in 2024 it will invest $ 24.9 billion in this area.

In the 1980s, Japan was a major semiconductor manufacturer, but later lost ground to such players as Taiwan, South Korea and China. “Japan wants a breakthrough in the field of chips. She wants to team up for research with countries like the US and bring in manufacturing capacity,” said Yong Won-ho, a supply chain analyst at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy. Previously already reportedthat Japan and the United States agreed to jointly develop advanced chips.

In the past few years, many companies and countries have been actively invested in the production of chips, equipment for them, etc. This was facilitated, on the one hand, by the shortage of semiconductors in the face of an increase in the number of gadgets, and on the other hand, by the desire of many countries to reduce their dependence in this area on foreign suppliers.

Japan last week announced on the introduction of restrictions on the export of 23 types of equipment for the production of semiconductors. According to experts, in fact, this is directed against China, which had previously experienced difficulties with the production of chips due to American restrictions on the export of technology.
