Italian teacher fired after 20 years of absenteeism

Metro reports that in Italy, at the request of the students, a teacher was fired, who had been skipping her job for 20 years.

It is noted that the school administration decided to dismiss Cinzia Paolina De Lio when the students organized a strike and refused to go to her lessons. The publication pointed out that the reason for this was that during the oral exam, the woman constantly corresponded with someone on the phone, giving grades in random order and not attaching importance to the answers of the students.

Already after the dismissal, according to Metro, the woman sued the school, having achieved reinstatement, but information soon appeared about her 20-year absenteeism. As noted in the publication, De Lio used sick leave, vacations and permissions to participate in conferences in order to appear at school as little as possible. What’s more, Metro said students called her occasional classes “chaotic and improvisational.”

The publication added that after that the court overturned the decision to reinstate the teacher in her position, and this decision was upheld by the country’s Supreme Court. In a media commentary, De Lio stated her intention to restore the true facts of this “totally surreal story.”
