India will overtake China as the most populous country

The United Nations predicts the world population will hit 8 billion on Tuesday, a “milestone in human development” before birth rates start to slow.
The UN statement says that this figure means that in just 12 years the world’s population has increased by 1 billion people.
“This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human life expectancy through improvements in public health, nutrition, personal care and medicine. This is also the result of high and sustained birth rates in some countries,” the UN said in a statement.
Middle-income countries, mostly in Asia, have accounted for most of the growth over the past decade, adding about 700 million people since 2011. India has added about 180 million people and should surpass China as the world’s most populous country next year.
