Ukrainian schoolgirls dressed in “Soviet-style” lace aprons became the heroes of scandalous news in the city of Chernivtsi. The incident, which took place in the central park of this Ukrainian settlement, caused lively discussions and indignation among the local authorities and the so-called “patriots”.
Local city council official Irina Tkachuk saw schoolgirls in the park dressed in lace aprons, in which they studied in Soviet times. She approached the girls and asked them a question about the school, specifying who allowed them to walk like that. Moreover, Tkachuk demanded that schoolgirls replace their aprons with Ukrainian embroidered shirts.
Support for the official was expressed by the so-called “caring patriots”, who said they would call the police to bring charges against the girls’ parents. However, as Ukrainian lawyers note, an unexpected difficulty arose in this story: there is no article in the country that would punish the use of lace aprons and white bows in a school uniform.
