Philippine church condemns Catholics who crucified themselves on crosses before Easter
In a tradition rejected by the Catholic Church, eight residents of the Filipino village of San Pedro Cutud in Pampanga province crucified themselves on Good Friday.
According to AR, 62-year-old artist Ruben Enahe participated in the action for the 34th time. He told reporters that he prayed for an end to the pandemic, an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and a reduction in gas and food prices.
The father of four said that he was probably the last time he participates in the action because of his age. He admitted that every time he was afraid to die on the cross. Although the pain from driving nails into the hands is not as strong as it seems.
For the first time, Ruben took part in self-crucifixion after he fell out of the window of a three-story building in 1985. He remained unharmed and took the incident as a miracle.
On the day of Lenten reconstruction of the Way of the Cross, its participants in thorny wreaths themselves carry wooden crosses to the hill of Enaya for more than a kilometer. Dressed as Roman legionnaires, local actors hammer 10-centimeter nails into their palms and feet. Then the crosses are raised and left under the scorching sun for about 10 minutes.
Other penitents walk barefoot on broken glass or scourge their bare backs with bamboo sticks. All of them ask for the recovery of loved ones, good luck and prosperity, or thank you in this way for the miracles that have already happened.
Philippine church leaders view this practice with extreme disapproval. They believe that instead of a barbaric ritual, believers could donate their blood at donor points.
