Two men who arrived in St. Petersburg from a tourist trip to Hong Kong were diagnosed with monkeypox. The Rospotrebnadzor office for St. Petersburg noted that the risk of infection exists given the tourist season.
Monkeypox is a viral disease that is accompanied by fever, intoxication, enlarged lymph nodes and the spread of a rash. In mild cases, the disease goes away on its own and lasts from 14 to 21 days.
“The sick people were hospitalized with characteristic symptoms in a medical organization with an infectious disease profile. There is no threat to the lives of patients,” it says message Rospotrebnadzor. The agency assured that the possibility of further spread of the infection has been prevented.
In August 2022, WHO declared a health emergency due to an outbreak of monkeypox in several countries. In May 2023, the state of emergency was lifted. In Russia, two cases of infection were then confirmed. The mortality rate from monkeypox is 3-6%.
