On the Internet, the number of fraudulent sites that masquerade as departed brands has increased five times, informs Kommersant with reference to Group-IB data.
According to the company, the number of such sites in the first six months of 2022 increased by 579% compared to the same period in 2021. At the moment, attackers are already using about 2,100 global brands and trademarks, compared to only 120 at the end of last year. Group-IB estimates global user losses at $80 million per month, without singling out Russia.
Most of these sites use fake pranks from the names of well-known companies to lure users, while other scammers resort to speculation on the recent departure of well-known brands from Russia. Attackers often use schemes with virtual payment cards in the AppStore and PlayStation Store or purchase access to Spotify Premium, Pornhub services, as well as goods such as IKEA, Group-IB said.
After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine on the Internet appeared many new tricks that allow you to make illegal transactions with funds. Attackers began to use social tension, the situation of foreign companies leaving the Russian market, or loopholes in payment services. Most often, they use difficulties with paying for goods or services, making payments abroad (when a person is there) and withdrawing currency.
