A bicycle battalion or bicycle police may appear in Russia as part of the State Road Safety Inspectorate (GIBDD). Employees of this unit will have to quickly respond to violations of traffic rules.

The proposal was made by employees of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Politics and sent a corresponding letter to the head of the Main Directorate for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Chernikov, Izvestia writes.

The appeal states that in the regions of Russia the number of traffic accidents involving cyclists is growing annually, not only on the roads, but also on the sidewalks. This is especially true for couriers, who often travel on two-wheeled vehicles.

According to the institute’s staff, the emergence of bicycle police can help solve this problem, because such violators are more difficult to catch for the usual traffic police due to unequal conditions.

Also, representatives of the bicycle battalion, the initiators believe, could take on the functions of monitoring recreation areas, where conflicts between citizens often arise.
