On Monday, the Rudnichny District Court of Kemerovo sentenced Andrey Novashov, a Kuzbass journalist, for “publicly distributing deliberately false information about the use of the RF Armed Forces, the exercise by state bodies of the Russian Federation of their powers” (part 1 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) to eight months of corrective labor. He will also have 10% of his salary deducted from the budget, he is “banned from journalistic activity,” the lawyer of the convicted Marina Yankina told Kommersant. The state prosecution requested 11 months of corrective labor with a two-year ban on journalistic activity as a punishment for Andrey Novashov’s publications on the VKontakte social network in March last year.
As follows from his recent publications on social networks, his guilt in the acts described in Part 1 of Art. 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, he did not recognize. His lawyer Marina Yankina said the verdict would be appealed. And if it comes into force, the 45-year-old journalist will not be able to serve his sentence at his main place of work as an employee of publications, since after the charges were brought, the investigation banned him from working in journalism. Therefore, correctional labor can be assigned by the penitentiary inspection, added Mrs. Yankina.
