One of the leaders of the Sicilian mafia, Matteo Messina Denaro, who was arrested this January, has died. After his arrest, he was held in a maximum security prison in the Italian city of L’Aquila, the news channel reported. RaiNews24.
The 62-year-old Cosa Nostra boss was undergoing treatment for colon cancer in prison. On Friday he fell into a coma. His mother and other close relatives came to see him at the hospital. The funeral of the mafioso is planned in his hometown of Castelvetrano in Sicily.
Messina Denaro was nicknamed Skinny. He disappeared without a trace while on vacation on the Tuscan seaside in the summer of 1993. He was on the list of the ten most dangerous criminals in the world and was wanted for almost 30 years. For his crimes, he was twice sentenced to the highest penalty in Italy – life imprisonment.
