A huge banyan tree charred by wildfires on the island of Maui, Hawaii, is sprouting new green leaves, raising hopes that all is not completely lost in the fire. Writes about this CNN.
The 150-year-old cultural landmark overlooks the courthouse square on Lahaina’s famed Front Street.
The tree was planted in 1873 and is the largest of its kind in the United States, reaching a height of more than 19 meters.
The heritage tree, which belongs to the fig family, creates the illusion of multiple trees thanks to its ability to form additional trunks from its roots, allowing it to expand. It currently has about 46 main trunks.
