Ig Nobel Prize for Research on Couples’ Heartbeats and Effects of Ice Cream on Chemotherapy

At Harvard took place 32nd Ig Nobel or Ignobel Prize Ceremony. The awards were presented in 10 categories, the event was held online. Among the winners is a group of scientists from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Sweden and Aruba who have found that the heartbeats of lovers who like each other when they first meet “begin to synchronize.” They received an award in the Applied Cardiology category.
Other laureates include:
- literature award: scholars from Canada, the US, the UK and Australia who analyzed what makes legal documents “unnecessarily difficult to understand”;
- in biology: scientists from Brazil and Colombia studied whether and how constipation affects the mating prospects of scorpions;
- in the field of medicine: scientists from Poland have found that when undergoing certain forms of “toxic chemotherapy”, patients will have fewer side effects if one of the components of the treatment is replaced with ice cream;
- in the field of engineering: scientists from Japan tried to find “the most efficient way to use fingers when turning a knob”;
- in art history: scholars from the Netherlands, Guatemala, the United States, and Austria explored “a multidisciplinary approach to ritual enema scenes on ancient Maya pottery”;
- in physics: two groups of scientists from China, Great Britain, Turkey and the USA tried to understand “how ducklings manage to swim in formation”;
- peace prizes: scientists from China, Hungary, Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Australia, Switzerland, the US have developed an algorithm that “helps gossipers decide when to tell the truth or lie”;
- on economics: scientists from Italy gave a mathematical explanation of why success often goes not to the most talented people, but to the most successful ones;
- for “technical safety”; to a Swedish scientist for “development of an elk crash test dummy.”
All winners were presented with paper cylinders, symbolizing “a container for storing all their knowledge.” They also received copies of banknotes worth 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollars (this money has already gone out of circulation).
The Ig Nobel Prize was established in 1991 as the opposite of the Nobel Prize. According to the official wording, the award is given “for achievements that first make you laugh, and then make you think.”
