A member of the Human Rights Council under the President of Russia (HRC) is in the hospital with a suspected concussion. As reported by the HRC in Telegram channel, yesterday, August 24, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, Mr. Kalyapin was attacked by an unknown person. He tried to cut his face and strangle him. The human rights activist managed to call the police, who detained the attacker.
Igor Kalyapin confirmed to RIA Novosti that he was in the hospital. “I don’t feel well. I’m in the hospital, nothing terrible, but I apparently have a broken nose, a concussion. Nauseous, dizzy,” he said.
As Igor Kalyapin himself said “Beware the News”, the attack took place at his home in a village in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The human rights activist was celebrating the birthday of his friend, a former police officer, at the neighbors’ house. There, one of the guests introduced himself as a policeman, and Igor Kalyapin invited him to his home. Further, according to the human rights activist, the man immediately attacked him.
“He naturally tried to kill me, he wanted to pierce my throat with a piece of glass. He was inadequate,” Mr. Kalyapin said.
The human rights activist also clarified that he was not sure that the incident was related to his activities. “I don’t know, perhaps it could somehow hurt him, but there were no apparent reasons for this,” he said.
Until February 6, 2022, Igor Kalyapin headed the Committee against Torture (recognized as an NGO-foreign agent). In January it was reported that in Nizhny Novgorod unidentified pasted up in the house where the 84-year-old mother of Mr. Kalyapin lives, posters of offensive content. It was written on them that the human rights activist “sold his fatherland for grants from the United States and Germany”, “helps terrorists” and is a “foreign agent”. The head of the Human Rights Council, Valery Fadeev, then called the actions of the unknown shameful and turned to the Nizhny Novgorod prosecutor’s office with a request to check the posters.
The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, called Igor Kalyapin, as well as the Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina, terrorists and called detain them. The reason for the dissatisfaction of the head of the republic was the involvement in the Committee against Torture founded by Mr. Kalyapin, Abubakar Yangulbaev, the son of the judge of the Supreme Court of Chechnya, Saidi Yangulbaev. In January 2022, he reported the kidnapping of his wife Zarema Musayeva by Chechen security forces in Nizhny Novgorod and linked this to the human rights activities of his son, who worked as a lawyer for the Committee against Torture. Ramzan Kadyrov threatened to the Yangulbaev family by “destruction” in case of “resistance”.
