This year, 44% of participants in an all-Russian survey plan to start learning a foreign language from scratch, with 29% naming English as such a language. Another 7% chose Chinese: it has overtaken French and German in popularity – 4% each want to learn them. At the same time, the majority noted that they decided to study a foreign language for personal development, as they enjoy the educational process and getting to know the culture of another country. Experts note that learning English from scratch is not common; most often Russians have residual school knowledge, but many adults actually have to learn Chinese without preparation.
