History textbooks for grades 5–9 are ready and are being reviewed, said Vladimir Medinsky, aide to the President of the Russian Federation and chairman of the Russian Military Historical Society. According to him, the textbooks will not be introduced throughout the country at the same time; first they will be tested in different regions.
“Now history textbooks for grades 5–9 are ready, essentially, because they are made on the basis of the existing textbooks in the line (by MGIMO Rector Anatoly.— “Ъ”) Torkunov and the rulers of your humble servant. They have been improved, adapted, made more modern,” said Mr. Medinsky TASS. In his opinion, these will be “the best textbooks in the last 30 years.”
The textbooks, according to the presidential aide, have been tested twice by the Academy of Sciences. Mr. Medinsky claims that “there has never been such a check before.” “The second series of reviews has now been sent, publication is planned for this year,” he added.
For grades 5–9 there will be a single history course, consisting of two volumes: History of Russia and General History. In the fifth grade there will only be General History (Rome, Greece, the Eastern Roman Empire, India), into which knowledge from the history of Russia (Chersonese, Arkaim, Phanagoria, Scythians, Sarmatians and the first Slavs) is woven.
From September 1, 2023, new history textbooks for grades 10–11 are being used in Russia, authored by Vladimir Medinsky, Anatoly Torkunov and scientific director of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Chubaryan. They have been criticized in the North Caucasus on the issue of Stalin’s deportations of peoples. In this regard, textbooks changes were made.
