Historian Malinovsky explained the action of the Israeli permanent representative to the UN who put on the yellow star

“More than a symbol of the Holocaust”

For any Israeli, the yellow star is more than a symbol of the Holocaust. This is a symbol of public connivance towards anti-Semitism, said historian Ilya Malinovsky, commenting on the behavior of the Israeli delegation to the UN. Earlier, Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, wore a yellow Star of David with the inscription “Never Again” at a Security Council meeting on the Middle East.

The Nazis forced Jews to wear similar six-pointed stars, sewn onto the front and back of their clothes during the Holocaust.

Gilad Erdan said he and the entire Israeli delegation would wear yellow stars until the Council condemned the actions of the Palestinian militant group Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah. He recalled that the UN Security Council was created in order to “not remain silent in the face of evil.” An Israeli diplomat spoke about his relatives who died in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II while “the world was silent.”

“Like my grandparents and the grandparents of millions of Jews, from now on my team and I will wear yellow stars,” concluded the permanent representative of the State of Israel.

“The yellow Star of David, or Lata, first appeared not in Nazi Germany, but in England in 1253,” says history and social studies teacher Ilya Malinovsky. “This monarch issued the derogatory “Statute of the Jews” and forced all Jews in the country to wear yellow stars, starting from the age of six. The German national fascists “picked up” the symbol of segregation of Jews based on nationality.

I would also like to remind you that the oppression and persecution of Jews occurred not only during the Holocaust, which, of course, remains the most terrible crime against this people – 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust. But at different times in different countries, anti-Semitic laws and codes were adopted.

Including in the Russian Empire, where officially until 1917 the Pale of Settlement existed, prohibiting Jews from living in capital cities and certain provinces. The exceptions were the merchants of the first guild, the intelligentsia and several other categories.

Or the famous “law on cooks’ children”, officially “On the reduction of gymnasium education” of 1887. Formally, it limited access to education for “ignoble” children; in fact, it was directed against Jews and children from half-blood marriages. In particular, under this law, Nikolai Korneychukov, the future writer Korney Chukovsky, was expelled from a gymnasium in St. Petersburg. He was the illegitimate son of the doctor Emmanuel Levenson.

So for any Israeli, the yellow star is more than a symbol of the Holocaust. This is a symbol of anti-Semitism and public connivance towards it in general. And I completely understand why Gilad Erdan wore it today.
