Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, the German authorities have granted asylum to 83 Russian men of military age from 18 to 45 years. These are official data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) for the period February 24, 2022 to July 31, 2023.

The total number of applications for asylum submitted by potential evaders from Russia amounted to 3291. Decisions were made on 1418 applications, another 1873 applications are pending. At the same time, only 138 applications were rejected, in another 1116 cases considered by the German authorities, we are talking about a “formal settlement of the procedure”, which means the application of the rules of the Dublin Agreement or the withdrawal of an asylum application.

BAMF points to the lack of precise data on the motives given by asylum seekers. Therefore, based on the information available, it is difficult to draw unambiguous conclusions about how many of them are conscientious objectors to military service or have other grounds for granting asylum.

According to Deutsche Welle (foreign media agent), the German opposition drew attention to the insufficient number of positive decisions on these petitions.
