German football functionary Hermann Winkler apologizes for post about Zelensky

Hermann Winkler, Vice President of the German Football Association (DFB), has apologized for a recent social media post in which he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “former Ukrainian actor”.
In his message, Winkler also expressed dissatisfaction with the unprecedented security measures during Zelensky’s visit to Berlin. He complained about the significant restrictions and cordoning off of the city, as well as the closure of access to the river Spree.
According to Deutsche Welle (foreign media agent), Winkler later deleted his entry, explaining that it was made “in a very emotional environment at the memorial in Treptow Park.” The vice president of the DFB apologized for the post and for the “irritation caused.”
German Football Association President Bernd Neuendorf called Winkler’s remarks “unacceptable” and “insulting” and spoke to him. He emphasized that such behavior is incompatible with the principles of the DFB.
On May 14, Zelensky held talks with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin. Later that day, Zelensky was awarded the Charlemagne International Prize in Aachen.
