An increase in the level of obesity is noted in 30 regions of Russia. Most of the increase in obesity is observed in men. This was announced by Oksana Drapkina, Chief Freelance Specialist in Therapy and General Medical Practice of the Russian Ministry of Health.

“Monitoring that has been underway since 1993 … shows that obesity in 30 regions of the Russian Federation tends to increase, this trend is especially pronounced in men,” she said at a meeting of the Council under the Government for Guardianship in the Social Sphere (quoted from “Interfax”).

As follows from the data presented by Oksana Drapkina, in 1993 the level of obesity in Russia among men was 8.3%, among women – 23.2%. In 2013, the indicator increased to 26.9% among men and 30.8% among women, in 2021 – up to 30.1% among men, 36.7% among women.

According to Ms. Drapkina, the Ministry of Health notes a low amount of plant products, including vegetables, fruits and cereals, as well as an extremely low level of consumption of legumes in the diet of Russians. At the same time, Russians consume a lot of red meat and processed meat products, sweets and pickles.
