Phone scammers came up with another scam with an expired SIM card. The new scheme is necessary to implement the old scam to establish message forwarding to the number the scammers need, which will allow them to change the password from the victim’s mobile bank and take her money. This was reported by the Moshelovka platform and the Bank of Russia.
The SIM card user is allegedly called by MTS or Beeline operators. Then the “employees” report that the SIM card is expiring or has already expired. To continue the work, Sims are asked to call the code from SMS. Otherwise, according to the swindler, the card will be blocked, the number will be selected and the user will no longer be able to restore anything.
In this way, attackers can gain access to the personal account on the website of the telecom operator. After that, the scammers redirect messages to the desired number. “Next, you can already change the password from the mobile bank, perform all the necessary actions with credit organizations …”, Moshelovka reported.
At the same time, as the resource clarifies, the owner of the account will not know about illegal operations, since SMS will begin to arrive to scammers.
The Bank of the Russian Federation recalled that in the summer of 2022 there were already precedents when scammers called customers under the guise of employees of the support service of a mobile operator.
