The leading specialist of the Phobos weather center, Mikhail Leus, said that the pillars of light seen over Moscow and Belgorod are an unusual atmospheric phenomenon.
According to Leus, pillars of light occur when the sun or moon is low on the horizon, usually around sunrise or sunset. Sometimes a column of light may also appear, for example, under the headlights of a car, a streetlight spotlight.
Light pillars appear due to the refraction of light in ice crystals in the air. Most often they can be observed at temperatures below zero Celsius.
Leus explained that the negative temperature was at an altitude of about 1 kilometer.
