The chief referee of a match in the English Premier League (EPL) will be a woman for the first time – Rebecca Welsh will referee the 18th round game between Fulham and Burnley on December 23, reported The Guardian. In 2022, Ms Welsh became the first woman to referee an FA Cup match.
Rebecca Welsh, 40, became an arbitrator in 2010. She has refereed Women’s Super League matches throughout her career, as well as the 2023 Women’s World Cup games in Australia and New Zealand.
The Guardian notes that another event within the Premier League was the appointment of black Sam Ellison as a referee. He will referee the Sheffield v Luton Town match on December 26th. Sam Ellison will become the first black Premier League referee in 15 years after Uriah Rennie retired from refereeing in 2009.
