Scientists have created a device that helps ships move along the Northern Sea Route with meter accuracy
The navigation module, which will determine the location of ships performing tasks on the Northern Sea Route with an accuracy of up to a meter, was created by engineers from Russian Space Systems.
Navigation aids have long been part of our daily lives. But like any technology, they are constantly being improved, achieving greater speed, data transfer and signal stability. The Russian GLONASS system has sufficient accuracy, but the error in measuring coordinates in such difficult areas as the Arctic still needs to be improved. This was carried out by RKS specialists and presented their development at the Army-2022 International Technical Forum.
As MK was told in the RKS, the navigation module developed by scientists consists of eight flat antennas and is comparable in size to a 2-centimeter-thick CD. Its feature is the determination of the position with an accuracy of 1 meter. This is achieved thanks to the interference-free communication channel through which the signal passes. Recall that conventional car navigators have an average measurement error of 10 meters.
The system itself is a complex that includes a navigation module and satellite data, which are combined into one common program. High accuracy is especially necessary for navigation in difficult northern regions, where the icebreaker needs to know the best route. To do this, the satellite, for its part, transmits data on where the ice layer is thinner on the route, and a high-precision navigator directs the captain in the right direction, allowing him to maneuver between obstacles located meters from the vessel. The information will be displayed in the ship’s navigator in the form of the following algorithm: “Swim 270 meters straight, turn left 90 degrees and swim another 70 meters …”.
Also, this system is useful in rescue operations at sea, where information about the specific location of the “rescued” is often important.
