Folk signs: October 13 – time to change the bed

October 13 in the folk calendar is Mikhail Straw or Grigoriev’s Day. On this day, it was customary to burn the old straw from their beds, and stuff pillows and mattresses with new.
Straw in Russia was used everywhere. She not only stuffed beds, but also covered floors, made curtains for windows from her, covered roofs with thatch, fed cattle with her. It was believed that the straw absorbs all the power of the earth.
Our ancestors had a belief that by burning their straw beds, you can protect yourself from the evil eye. In addition, over the course of a year, the straw in mattresses and pillows became dirty, fell off, and besides, insects could start there. So the rite also had a hygienic function. Straw beds are a thing of the past, but if you want to keep the tradition, you can change the bedding, or maybe update the blankets, pillows or mattress.
In general, before the Feast of the Intercession, which is celebrated on October 14, cleanliness and order were put in the house and in the yard, garbage and various rubbish were thrown out, and the threshold was poured with holy water.
By the way, on the threshold that day it was customary to bathe children – it was believed that this way you can protect them from diseases.
It was a bad omen to walk in dirty or worn out clothes on St. Grigoriev’s Day – it was believed that this way one could attract trouble. As early as October 13, they tried not to invite strangers into the house and did not accept gifts from anyone, since this also promised trouble.
They were also wary of going into the forest that day – they believed that forest spirits were rampaging there before wintering, which could harm a person.
Natural signs on October 13 are as follows:
– the first snow fell – winter weather will not be established soon;
– if the fallen snow is dry, next year will be fruitful;
– The moon is foggy and muddy – to bad weather.
