Sales of toy “pneumatic guns” lead to injuries among teenagers

In Russia, in violation of technical regulations on the safety of toys, children’s air guns, as well as exact copies of firearms, are sold. The Association of Children’s Goods Industry Enterprises drew attention to this.

As MK learned, in general in Russia recently the number of toy weapons sold has increased by 135%. This is generally the fastest growing market segment. At the same time, there are not many Russian weapons manufacturers, but their sales have increased sharply over the past 2 years. For example, through a well-known online store, one of the manufacturers sold 3.6 thousand of one type of pistols over the past month for a total amount of 4.2 million rubles. Experts from the Association contacted the marketplaces and stated that the positioning of such weapons as children’s weapons directly contradicts the technical regulations.

It is curious that not long ago the General Prosecutor’s Office sent an appeal to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, in which they reported on the worsening problem of the indiscriminate use of unlicensed pneumatics by minors and, as a result, children receiving serious injuries, including disabilities. According to a representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office, teenagers use products that closely resemble weapons and are also sold through marketplaces. They are purchased without a license, are not registered, and restrictions and prohibitions do not apply to them. And the tragic consequences of using such products, which are structurally similar to pneumatic weapons, have been recorded in many regions of the country. The Prosecutor General’s Office draws attention to the Krasnodar, Stavropol territories, Moscow, Oryol, Sverdlovsk regions, Moscow and St. Petersburg. For example, in August 2023, a 15-year-old Muscovite shot his friend in the face with such a “toy” weapon; experts diagnosed the victim with a blunt injury to the eyeball. Taking this into account, the Prosecutor’s Office, by the way, in the person of First Deputy Prosecutor General Razinkin, asked the Government to consider the issue of additional regulation of the rules for the sale of pneumatic weapons, as well as products with muzzle energy from 0.5 to 3 joules, limiting their sale to minors.
