Bones of unknown animals discovered in Yakutia – Kommersant

Albert Protopopov, head of the department of mammoth fauna of the Academy of Sciences of Yakutia, said TASSthat scientists have discovered in the Churapcha region of the republic the remains of unknown animals, presumably from the early Pleistocene – Neogene era, as well as a human site of the Paleolithic period.

“In the Churapchinsky region of Yakutia, a site of a Paleolithic man was found; its age is approximately over 30 thousand years. Artifacts have been found that correspond to this archaeological culture. A large number of bones of mammoth fauna were discovered, which bear traces of exposure (human.— “Kommersant”). In addition to them, bones of unknown animals of the Pleistocene-Neogene era were found,” said Mr. Protopopov. He added that the discovered bones were badly damaged.

The scientist said that bones of rhinoceroses and lions were also found at the human site. According to him, radiocarbon dating has already established the approximate age of some artifacts – 30-40 thousand years. This is in keeping with Dyuktai culture, he said. Mr. Protopopov added that the location of the finds was recognized as promising and scientists from the Academy of Sciences of Yakutia will develop it together with the Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and colleagues from other scientific centers.
