Environmental inspector acknowledged the death of wild animals in the Oryol region

Telegram channel “Okhotniki.ru” information has again appeared about large-scale poisoning of fauna representatives. This time, the death of birds, hares and foxes was recorded in the Oryol region. The suspected cause of death is poisoned grain. This is not the first such case, both in the region itself and in Russia in general.

Environmentalists blame the deaths of wild animals on farmers who try to protect crops from mice by spreading poisoned grain. Rosselkhoznadzor periodically reminds that this cannot be done: grain must be carefully placed in holes, and not laid out in heaps along the boundary. But it seems the inspectors are talking to the deaf.

For example, back in 2022, the corpses of many animals and birds were discovered in the Dolzhansky district of the Oryol region. It turned out that in one day 62 dead ravens, buzzards, buzzards, 2 short-eared owls, several raccoon dogs, hares and foxes were found at this place. The prosecutor’s office of the Oryol region began an investigation into this case. It turned out that APK Yunost LLC, on whose land plot dead animals were found, violated legislation in the field of safe handling of pesticides and agrochemicals. As a result, the head of the company was ordered to eliminate the violation of the law and compensate for the damage.

This year, Rosselkhoznadzor again noted that “not everywhere they approach this work responsibly: often a portion of poisoned grain ends up, at best, next to a mouse hole, and at worst, lies in piles near forest strips.”

The Oryol region is not the only region with such problems. One of the most egregious cases occurred in the Stavropol region. More than 800 gray cranes, which are listed in the Red Book, were found dead there. The reason is the same – poison for rodents, which careless farmers scattered at random.

In April, the State Duma even held a round table on the issue of legal regulation of the circulation and use of pesticides and agrochemicals in Russia. Then the participants came to the conclusion that the issue of rodent control is practically not regulated, which creates great problems in preventing such cases. The hunters especially noted that they were given huge bills for every extra duck they killed, but farmers who were killing hundreds of animals and birds could not be held accountable…

What happened now in the Oryol region is further proof of this. The situation was commented on by Ivan Trishkin, Deputy Head of the Department of Environmental Supervision and Nature Management, Head of the Department of Hunting Supervision, Regulation and Use of Fauna:

– Inspectors investigate and identify cases of animal death. But not to say that it is massive. We found several foxes and several ravens. Massive is when it was previously discovered over a hundred birds. There is no such thing yet.

– Is it due to rodent poison?

– Presumably. Samples have been collected and sent for research. We cannot yet say that this is poisoning; we have no official documentation. A statement to the police has been written.

Ivan Trishkin also noted that “this is not an emergency yet. That’s how many dead animals there were that year – yes, it was large. This year there is no such thing.”
