Electronic cigarettes do not help people quit smoking

According to a new study, vaping does not help a person quit smoking – their users are more likely to stop using e-cigarettes than traditional tobacco.
Researchers at George Washington University in Washington, DC, collected data from 545 people who regularly smoked both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. They found that after five years, more than half had given up e-cigarettes, while only a third had quit.
Vapes are often advertised as a way to help tobacco users kick their habit, ostensibly as a “safer” transition from cigarette smoking. However, a new study completely refutes this claim. People who use both options often continue to smoke regular tobacco.
E-cigarettes have exploded in popularity over the past decade, especially among teenagers.
The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Tobacco Control, collected data from the National Institutes of Health’s annual population survey.
The study uses a pool of 49,000 Americans contacted each year to discuss their consumption of tobacco products such as cigarettes and vapes and assess their overall health. As part of the survey, participants answered how often they use any type of tobacco and electronic cigarettes.
The resulting numbers refute the claims of the vape industry that their products are a valuable tool to help a person quit smoking, and not just another unhealthy habit that causes addiction in people.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that in the US alone, nearly 2.6 million teens currently use e-cigarettes, a number that is simply uncountable worldwide.
