Serbian tennis player still refuses to get vaccinated for tennis
21-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic said he had no choice but to miss March’s tennis tournaments in the United States after the country’s authorities said foreigners would need to be vaccinated against the coronavirus to enter the US.
The Transportation Security Administration on January 4 said that the requirement for full vaccination of foreign air passengers entering the country will be in effect until April 10.
This means Djokovic will miss the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 Series hardcourt tournament from March 8-19, 2023, and the ATP Miami Open from March 20-April 2.
“Look, if it’s official, then it is. What can I do? Nothing, that’s all. You know my position. It is what it is. I hope to participate, but if I can’t come, then I won’t I will come,” Djokovic told reporters after reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament in Adelaide, Australia on the evening of January 5.
The Serbian tennis player has already missed the American tournaments in 2022. He was unable to travel to New York for the US Open in August without proof of vaccination.
Djokovic, 35, also failed to defend his Australian Open title last year after he was deported from the country due to lack of a covid shot.
This year, the Australian authorities made concessions and Djokovic was still granted a visa to participate in local tournaments after Australia lifted a rule that required foreigners to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
