The Russian authorities may reconsider their position regarding the WhatsApp messenger (owned by the Meta company, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) due to the appearance of a new function in it. First Deputy Chairman of the Duma Committee on Information Policy Anton Gorelkin spoke about this on Wednesday, September 13.
The parliamentarian’s comment followed WhatsApp’s announcement of the launch of a channel creation feature, which was announced back in June. At the same time, the official WhatsApp channel in the messenger is already available for viewing.
In fact, this means that the messenger will begin mass dissemination of information, and therefore the approach to it, from the point of view of Russian legislation, may change, Gorelkin said.
Meanwhile in Yaroslavl since September prohibited the creation of school chats in instant messengersthat exist outside Russian jurisdiction. This also applies to WhatsApp on the basis of the federal law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection”.
