Demographer Korotaev: the retirement age in Russia may be raised in 20–30 years

Demographer Andrei Korotaev believes that the retirement age in Russia may be raised again in 20-30 years. The specialist spoke about this in an interview with NEWS.ru.

According to the expert, by 2050 it will be necessary to either raise the retirement age or cut the size of pensions in order to feed the elderly, whose number exceeds the working-age population.

Korotaev believes that the vast majority of people will give preference to extending their working lives.

The publication’s interlocutor added that they will not be able to cancel pensions at all. However, people around 2050 will have to choose between these two options.

The process of raising the retirement age will in the future occur throughout the world and will be accompanied by social tension, the demographer concluded.
