Moscow is hosting the main event for young metropolitan chess lovers, their parents and coaches – the final of the chess championship. About four hundred young chess players aged 11 to 19 will spend nine days at the Hotel Seligerskaya – the last day of chess battles will be November 29th.

First, quarter-finals were held at the district level. They were fought mainly by beginners and guys with a low chess rating. The winners advanced to the semi-finals and met there with the guys with higher ratings. Finally, titled players who have the right not to participate in the qualifying rounds were added to them in the final.

“This year we have radically changed the concept of the competition,” said Artyom Akhmetov, chief judge of the competition. – Previously, we held them at some sites, to which the participants traveled on their own. This has always caused certain problems: preparation for competitions, work with a coach, analysis of previous games… Besides, Moscow is big, the participants live in different districts. Even if competitions are held in the city center, in the Kremlin, it will still be very inconvenient for someone to get there, for someone the conditions will be better, for someone worse.

The new concept with the hotel, of course, hits the pocket. Maybe it’s a bit of a shame to rent a hotel room in your own city. But then the participants are completely immersed in the atmosphere of the competition, they live in a tournament mode. Moreover, most of the coaches did not leave their wards, but also moved to the same hotel for the duration of the final. In general, everything happens on one site. In the morning, at 10.30, boys aged 11 and 13 compete, at four o’clock the main battles between all other groups take place. In the interim – analysis of the games played, work with the coach, preparation for the next day.

There are ten groups in the final: five age groups (11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 years old), in each group – separately for boys, separately for girls.

“Brains, unlike biceps, of course, are the same for everyone,” commented Vyacheslav Borisov, head coach of the Kurchatov chess section and chairman of the children’s and youth commission of the Moscow Chess Federation. – And in the early age groups there is no particular difference between boys and girls. However, with age, when male hormones begin to stand out in the guys, they become angrier in sports. In addition, there are initially many more boys than girls in chess, so the likelihood that there will be stronger players among them is higher. All this leads to the fact that the Moscow chess champion among boys, as a rule, easily beats the champion among girls.

Chess is a special game. Imagine: in three halls there are four hundred children aged 11 to 19 years. And silence! Discipline and focus. Young chess players sit and look at the boards. The arbitrators walk silently through the ranks. From time to time, a quiet knock of a moving figure is heard. You can turn to your opponent in two cases: to offer a draw or to say “correct” – if there is a need to touch a piece, but the player is not going to move it. Remember the iron chess rule: “touch a piece – move?” So that this does not happen, it is necessary to warn.

After the pandemic years, as Artyom Akhmetov said, this is the first year with such a large number of participants. And this was another reason for changing the concept of holding the final.

“The pandemic, of course, distorted the training of athletes, many went online,” he says. – Of course, we also held face-to-face tournaments, but it was difficult. In order to simply get into the competition, it was necessary to perform many additional actions – for example, to pass tests. However, for chess, as it turned out, the online format is quite acceptable.

Indeed, chess games and even competitions were held online long before the advent of the Internet. There is a legend that the Byzantine emperor Nikephoros I played chess by correspondence with Harun-ar-Rashid. The latter, however, is a personality so mythologized that it is very difficult to separate reality from fiction in his biography.

There is information – also unverified – that in 1119 the French king Louis VI the Fat played by correspondence with the king of England, Henry I, the son of William the Conqueror.

In 1694, Venetian merchants played correspondence chess with their Croatian counterparts. The player was given three days to think, one game could last several years, and there were cases when the opponent died without waiting for the endgame.

But the real flourishing of parties at a distance began in the 19th century. Between 1824 and 1828 the chess clubs of Edinburgh and London played by correspondence. In 1878, the first telephone game took place. Three years later, the telegraph went into action – with its help, Liverpool played with distant Calcutta. In 1896, with the help of a telegraph transatlantic cable, chess players from London, without leaving the banks of the Thames, met at the chessboard with rivals from New York.

“Computerization has had a huge impact on the development of chess,” says Vyacheslav Borisov. – Now any chess program can easily beat even the world champion. Therefore, the analysis and analysis of batches is carried out on computers. The machine immediately shows the combinations that were missed. This fundamentally changes the system of preparation for tournaments.

For example, many openings are no longer played. Some of them were closed by people, some by a computer. What does “closed” mean? This means that the analysis showed that if at the very beginning you make such a move, then further – wherever you go – you will still be a loser. And if so, then why do it?

However, as Vyacheslav Borisov said, there are still situations when the computer gives not quite adequate advice. These are “closed” positions when there are many pawns on the board. In such cases, the nearest moves do not give a result, first you need to regroup the pieces. And in this, a man is still much stronger than a machine.

– Chess, of course, has a positive effect on the development of the child, – says Vyacheslav Borisov. But under two conditions. First, if they are not overloaded. And secondly, if you practice at the level, and not just teach the child to “ride a horse.”
