In Rus’, from that day on, the weather was monitored for 12 days: it was believed that each of them predicted the weather for the corresponding month of the new year. Traditionally, on this day, the whole family gathered, invited relatives and friends and enjoyed honey or dishes with the addition of honey – it was believed that this would help improve the health of all those present. Street dogs and cats should not be allowed into the house, and, on the contrary, you should not let your pets out of the house without supervision. A dog, for example, needs to be taken for a walk on a leash – then it will definitely not disappear from your field of vision.
The people believed that evil spirits could turn into not only a living being, but also a thing. Therefore, everything found on this day, even if it is your thing that was lost earlier, it is better to bypass it and in no case take it in your hands, let alone bring it home.
You can’t leave windows and doors open, dry clothes on the street, you can’t get angry, swear and scandal, you can’t let another person carry your things, you can’t leave or pour unfinished drinks on the street – all this, according to popular signs, threatens with misfortunes.
It is not recommended to take on new business today – they are unlikely to be successful.
It is a good sign to give alms to a beggar. But at the same time, you can’t look him in the eye, so as not to take over his problems.
