The Crimean authorities plan to restore the water supply from the Dnieper through the North Crimean Canal in the future, said the head of the Crimean parliament Vladimir Konstantinov. According to him, “a fundamental decision to reconstruct the dam of the Kakhovka reservoir has been made,” but it will be implemented following the results of the military operation in Ukraine.
“During the period when there is no dam, we could pump Dnieper water into the canal. To do this, we also need to restore the water intake, pumping stations, and carry out the necessary hydraulic engineering work. In the future, we plan to do this too,” the parliamentarian told RIA Novosti.
Ukraine provided up to 85% of Crimea’s fresh water needs through the North Crimean Canal. After the republic joined the Russian Federation, Ukraine stopped supplying water to the region. At the end of February 2022, after the start of the Russian military operation, the channel was unblocked. Crimean authorities assessed damage from the water blockade amounted to 2 trillion rubles.
Water stopped flowing into the canal again due to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station (HPP). Emergency happened June 6. Water flooded settlements on both sides of the Dnieper. hydroelectric power station planned restore.
