Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko broke the world record for the total stay in orbit, TASS reports. On February 4 at 11:30:08 Moscow time, Mr. Kononenko surpassed the result of Gennady Padalka, who spent a total of 878 days 11 hours 29 minutes 48 seconds in space.
Oleg Kononenko is now on the fifth space flight of his career. It is expected that on June 5 at 00:00:20 Moscow time he will become the first person to spend a thousand days in space. TASS notes that in June the cosmonaut will celebrate his 60th birthday in orbit, and after the completion of the year-long expedition (September 23), his result will reach 1110 days.
Oleg Kononenko is the commander of the Roscosmos cosmonaut corps. He made his first flight into space in April 2008 on the Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft. After this flight to the ISS, the cosmonaut was awarded the titles “Hero of Russia” and “Pilot-Cosmonaut of Russia.” Oleg Kononenko made the second, third and fourth flights in December 2011, July 2015 and December 2018. The fifth flight took off on September 15, 2023.
