The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) published the reasoning of the verdict on the appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) against the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend membership in the international organization. In the document (.pdf), which consists of 24 pages and 129 points, states that the IOC, in its verdict on the suspension of the ROC, “did not violate the principles of legality of equality and proportionality,” so the decision remains in force. The decision itself to reject the CAS appeal accepted February 23.

IOC suspended Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023. The basis for this decision was the inclusion in the Olympic councils of the regions annexed to Russia – the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. The IOC leadership believes that the Olympic councils of the new Russian regions are still under the control of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. The suspension means that the ROC does not have the right to act as a national Olympic committee and receive funding from the Olympic movement.

In November OCD filed to CAS an appeal against the IOC decision and asked to restore him to all lost rights. On 23 February 2024, CAS announced that it had been rejected. The ROC said the CAS decision speaks to an “unprecedented scale of civil and sporting discrimination” against Russians ahead of the Paris Olympics.
