British singer Adele, performing in Las Vegas, called herself a “borderline alcoholic”

British singer Adele admitted to fans in Las Vegas that she suffered from alcoholism. She decided to quit drinking three months ago, describing her situation as “borderline alcoholism.” Adele also stated that she could not cope without alcoholic beverages for a considerable part of her life for many years.

Between songs, Grammy Award-winning singer Adele often banters and chats with the audience, often sharing personal anecdotes and highlighting lucky fans. Performing at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the 35-year-old singer told fans on stage that she had recently given up alcohol after watching audience members drink “pints” of whiskey sours, and admitted that she now only drinks wine. She told a fan: “Enjoy the whiskey. I’m very, very jealous.”

Singer Adele is a 16-time Grammy Award winner and the first artist to win Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year twice. Her song Skyfall for the 007 James Bond franchise won an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

In an interview with The Guardian, she admitted: “I stopped drinking about three and a half months ago. It’s boring. I mean, I was literally borderline alcoholic for most of 20 years, but I miss it so much.” Adele also gave up caffeine.

In October 2022, Adele told American Vogue that during her first emergency shopping trip during quarantine, she bought the iconic Whispering Angel rosé wine, which turned her into a “barking dog.”

The British singer recalled that her drinking “got earlier and earlier” during lockdown. “I remember coming to America during Covid, in isolation. It was 11am and I had definitely drunk about four bottles of wine,” she told the Evening Standard newspaper.

Adele, 35, previously spoke about her relationship with alcohol during a March 2023 appearance and shared that she fears losing control: “I’ve always had a very close relationship with alcohol. I was always very fascinated by him. This is what kept my father away from me. So I always wanted to know what was so great about it.”

She told the press that she quickly realized how susceptible she was to the harassment of the relentless paparazzi, which led her to drink alcohol: “They drive you crazy.”

Adele subsequently told Oprah Winfrey that she quit drinking after her father, Mark Evans, died in May 2021: “It’s a great way to really know yourself – just drink water and be sober.”

The musician’s fourth album, 30, released in 2021, features a song, “I Drink Wine,” about drowning out the sorrows and stresses of adulthood: “When I was a kid / Every thing could blow my mind / Soak it all up for fun / But now I only drink wine.”

Speaking to Vogue in 2021, the “Easy on Me” singer-songwriter opened up about her struggles with fame and said that at one point she considered leaving music:

“I became really famous right after Amy Winehouse died,” she explained, adding, “And we watched her die right in front of our eyes.”

Many Western media believe that the singer recently gave up alcohol because she was planning a week of celebrations in honor of her son Angelo’s eleventh birthday on October 19: “We have a busy week or month ahead of him celebrating. He’s a lot like me because I take my birthday very seriously.”

The “Rolling in the Deep” singer noted that her only child “seems to have adopted” very similar habits to her when it comes to birthday celebrations. “He: “Can I do this and that?” I answer: “It’s very expensive.” You’re 11. Maybe we should have a tea party?” , she explained.
